Project Description

The existing paint system (zinc/epoxy/urethane) was aging and the client was looking to repaint the entire tank. Existing corrosion on the exterior of the tank dome prompted the sole specification of RUST GRIP to encapsulate existing rust and possible lead based paint. Northern Natural Gas was also seeking a complete coating system that would not only stop rust but also stop solar heat load/absorption and provide long lasting color and gloss. SUPER THERM was specified as the intermediate coat to block heat load and ENAMO GRIP as the color matched topcoat.

Coating Solution

2 coats of RUST GRIP each coat @ 4 mils DFT,

1 coat of SUPER THERM @ 10 mils DFT,

1 coat of ENAMO GRIP @ 4 mils DFT

Results

Encapsulation of the weld seams and the dome where corrosion was present. SUPER THERM applied on the walls and dome to reduce flaring, and ENAMO GRIP coated on the walls providing a gloss finish, which is mold and mildew resistant. The surface preparation was a high power pressure wash @ 4,000 psi. No abrasive blasting was used. Walls were painted with telescopic lift while dome was painted with rope access.
