How Do Moisture-Cured Polyurethanes Perform in High Humidity?

Because Rust Grip® cures by drawing moisture from the air, high-humidity environments actually speed up the curing process — making it the ideal moisture-cured polyurethane for offshore, marine, tropical, and industrial applications. It offers six core advantages for extreme corrosion environments where traditional epoxy or zinc-rich primers fail.

Minimal Surface Preparation

Paint directly over firm rust. No white-metal sandblasting required.

Single-Component

Primer, mid-coat, and top-coat in one can. No Part A + Part Bmixing.

Versatile Application

Brush, roller, or airless sprayer. Apply on metal, concrete, masonry, or wood.

Aluminum Strength

Loaded with metallic aluminum pigment for additional mechanical strength.

Extreme Heat Resistance

Continuous surface temperatures up to 325°F after curing.

3-Year Shelf Life

Long-term stability in unopened containers under normal conditions.

What Industry Certifications Does Rust Grip Hold?

Rust Grip® is proudly made in the USA under US Patent 5,695,812 and has been rigorously validated by global industrial entities and standardized testing.

ASTM Lab Testing

Perfect 10 out of 10 rating on ASTM B117 (15,000-hour Salt Spray Test at 6 mils DFT) and ASTM D5894 (10,000-hour Cyclic Salt Fog Test at 6 milsDFT).

Petrobras ISO 12944-9

Outperformed all tested zinc-free, single-component paint systems. Initial pull strength 1,813 PSI; 1,638 PSI after 12 cycles.

US Army Corps of Engineers

Officially designated as the "Best Coating Tested" in independent evaluation.

What Are the Technical Specifications for Rust Grip?

Rust Grip® is a single-component, moisture-cured polyurethane loaded with aluminum pigment. Below are the specifications and application parameters verified in lab and field testing.

Rust Grip® is a tough, single-component moisture-cure polyurethane coating loaded with metallic aluminum pigment for additional strength. In most cases, white-metal blasting is notrequired. It resists chemical solvents and acid splashes. One product replaces a traditional 3-product primer + mid-coat + topcoat system, applied in 2 coats for light-to-medium rust or 3 coats for heavy rust and marine applications.

Rust Grip® can be applied to metal, concrete, masonry, and wood. Application is by airless sprayer, brush, or roller. Application thickness depends on surface profile. Standard lab testing is conducted at 6 mils DFT per coat.

"I try to Rust Grip every piece of steel I can, because it really helps us save time and money on maintenance. Once I Rust Grip something I do not have to worry about it again. We love your product and we are always trying to make our job easier, and this is one less thing we have to worry about once it is on. The pictures with the rusted, pitted rams are from2019, where we took them off the aframe, removed the rust, applied the Rust Grip and painted them with a one part polyurethane paint."

Frequently Asked Questions About Rust Grip

Where can I buy Rust Grip? New

Rust Grip® is available for purchase directly through Volta Coatings, the official
USA Distributor. Fill out the purchase inquiry form on this page or call +818-696-3786 to place an order. Volta Coatings ships Rust Grip nationwide across the United States — available in 1-gallon cans and 5-gallon pails. Volta Coatings is an Authorized SPI Distributor for Rust Grip®.

What is the smallest amount of Rust Grip I can buy?

Rust Grip is available in either a 1-gallon can or a 5-gallon pail.

Do I need to mix multiple parts before applying Rust Grip?

No. Rust Grip is a single-component system that requires no mixing of Parts A and B, saving time on the job site.

What is the maximum surface temperature Rust Grip can withstand?

Once fully cured, Rust Grip provides extreme heat resistance and can withstand continuous surface temperatures up to 325°F.

Is sandblasting required before applying Rust Grip?

No. Rust Grip is designed to be applied directly over firm, existing rust, eliminating the need for expensive white-metal sandblasting.

How many coats of Rust Grip are typically required?

For light-to-medium rust, two coats are recommended. For heavy rust or severe marine environments, a three-coat application is standard. Lab testing is conducted at 6 mils DFT per coat.

Is Rust Grip resistant to chemicals?

Yes. Rust Grip is engineered to defend critical infrastructure against chemical solvents and acid splashes.

How does Rust Grip compare to zinc-rich primers?

In Petrobras ISO 12944-9 testing, Rust Grip outperformed all tested zinc-free, single-component paint systems. It provides equivalent corrosion protection without zinc, eliminating the disposal and health concerns associated with zinc-rich coatings.

What is the surface tensile strength of Rust Grip?

Rust Grip cures to a surface tensile strength of 6,780 PSI — nearly double standard US highway concrete (3,500 PSI). It reaches full tensile strength approximately 3 weeks after application.

Can Rust Grip encapsulate lead-based paint or asbestos?

Yes. Rust Grip is ASTM E1795 certified as a Biohazard Encapsulator. It can permanently encapsulate lead-based paint, asbestos, and other hazardous coatings on existing infrastructure — eliminating the cost and disruption of full hazardous-material removal.

Is Rust Grip recommended for homes by the beach or ocean? New

Yes. Rust Grip® is specifically engineered for harsh coastal and marine atmospheres. It carries an ISO 12944-6 C5H rating — the highest category for atmospheric corrosivity — which classifies it as designed for 20+ years to first maintenance in coastaland offshore environments. Salt-laden air, humidity, and UV exposure that destroy ordinary paints are exactly the conditions Rust Grip is built to withstand. It bonds directly to metal railings, wrought iron, gates, outdoor furniture, fences, and exterior steel without sandblasting — making it ideal for beachfront and oceanside homes.

What is the theoretical spread rate of Rust Grip?

On flat surfaces, Rust Grip yields approximately 100 square feet per gallon at 2 coats, and 65 square feet per gallon at 3 coats. The recommended coverage rate including 10% waste is 90 sq. ft./gallon for light-to-medium rust (2 coats) and 61.2 sq. ft./gallon for heavy rust or marine applications (3 coats).

How does high humidity affect the curing time of Rust Grip?

Unlike traditional coatings, high-humidity environments actually speed up the curing process because the formula draws moisture directly from the air to harden.

What is the shelf life of an unopened can of Rust Grip?

Rust Grip features a 3-year shelf life when kept in unopened containers under normal conditions.

What surfaces can Rust Grip be applied to?

Rust Grip bonds securely to metal, concrete, masonry, and wood.

What is the solid content of Rust Grip?

Rust Grip is 62.2% solids by weight and 51.4% solids by volume, providing a heavy-duty protective layer.

Is Rust Grip approved for marine vessels?

Yes. Rust Grip is class-approved by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and has been used on ABS-class vessels including the Mubarak Challenger (UAE), the Al Mafyar LNG Carrier (Qatar), and Qatar Navigation's fleet.

What is the recommended dry film thickness (DFT) for Rust Grip?

Rust Grip's official lab testing was conducted at 6 mils DFT per coat. Two coats at 6 mils each is recommended for light-to-medium rust; three coats for heavy rust or marine applications.

Is Rust Grip food-safe?

Yes. Rust Grip is USDA-approved for use around food, lead-free, and chromate-free. It is suitable for food processing facilities, beverage plants, agricultural buildings, and animal facilities.

Does Rust Grip have a fire rating?

Yes. Rust Grip holds a Class A fire coating rating. It will not contribute to flame spread and will help prevent fire propagation across the coated surface.
